I suddenly find myself with more time to shoot, something that I’ve been lacking for the last couple of years. So I’ve had an idea for a project rattling around in my head for quite some time.
One interesting thing about Nevada that I wasn’t aware of when we moved here is that it’s quite geologically active. When you travel off the beaten path (or at least away from Reno in particular) you notice random rock formations in the middle of wide open areas. I’ve been thinking about shooting these formations in black and white, and then compiling them into a photobook (or at least a set on flickr). This is something that’ll have to wait until spring of course, given the road conditions this time of year.

Virginia City offers a variety of good places to shoot. Not only do you have the excellent cemetery, but a short walk along the board covered sidewalks offer a great chance to explore the local color. Of course, there’s the standard locations like the church and the Mark Twain museum, but it’s also important to explore off of the beaten path. Some of the best shots I’ve taken in VC have been of the back of the buildings on main street – you really get a feel for the way the “city” used to be back in the pioneer days. Make sure to take the short drive down Six Mile canyon if you have the chance. It’s really a pretty drive, particularly in the spring and fall.
